An indispensable complement to any DBT program
I learned about this book by following Amanda’s tumblr of all things, and was shocked to learn that she was a well-respected social worker, BPD researcher, specialist and therapist. After getting over being a bit starstruck, I looked into the book, and realized that it was exactly what I’d been looking for.As many DBT participants know, the book/binder/materials that we’re given can be a little bit overwhelming and unwieldy. It’s not often clear what worksheet to turn to, especially when we’ve already gone through all of the units and aren’t following specific homework assignments anymore (or we are, but need additional help with specific issues that come up day to day. This planner offer a simple way to check in daily with all four skills, as well as short sections for gratitude, daily goals, and “today’s shining moment.” It generally takes no more than five minutes to fill out an entry for the day. For those struggling with addiction or who engage in destructive behavior, there is also a “days sober” counter for each day. I’m lucky enough not to struggle with addictions, so I often change what I’m counting in this space; for instance, if I’m going through a rough patch, I may write in this space “days since berating myself.” If I’m in a good space but want to decrease a behavior that is somewhat unhealthy, I might say “days without caffeine.” The planner is endlessly customizable! It’s not a journal, and not meant to be a replacement for one. What’s so great about it for me is that it is such a simple way for me to remind myself of DBT skills on a daily basis. If I’m not sure how I practiced, say, distress tolerance on a certain day, I can go look in my DBT materials for a refresher. There may also be days when I haven’t practiced that skill, and that’s okay too — I can just leave that spot blank. At the beginning of each week, there is also a quick checklist for each day to allow you to check in with physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual needs. Since I’m not religious, I simply avoid questions relating to those aspects. Otherwise, it’s a good reminder to check that you’re getting balanced meals, enough sleep, practicing mindful breathing, etc. These are things that are often easy to forget between weekly DBT sessions, so I find that the planner keeps me grounded and accountable on a daily basis, without any pressure if I accidentally miss a day.At regular intervals, the planner includes a more thorough assessment to gauge improvement, allowing you to recalibrate your goals. I know that this is a planner that I will be buying again year after year as I improve my DBT skills and recover from BPD. I hope that new editions will come out that incorporate improvements, as well.It would definitely be helpful if Amazon provided an example of one of the daily planning worksheets.

    Very helpful
I have been in DBT for a year. This journal helps me to put it all together at the end of each day. It’s simple, yet highlights the important things in my day, with a specific, guided, format. It has increased my understanding and use of my DBT skills. It has kept me organized and on task.

Decent planner AND it keeps skills in front of me
Let’s be frank: I suck at homework. Out of sight, out of mind. Certainly out of practice. So having this for my well-being journal really helps keep DBT skills in my attention, and that really helps. Plus it’s wire-bound and smaller than 8.5×11, which are deal makers for me. I love that there’s lots of room for each day and a great mix of structure and freedom to record what I want. I can’t say I can imagine using this as an actual appointment calendar, though.I did use the weekly and monthly self-care tracking for a good long while before it just got too onerous, especially because the weekly/monthly don’t match up — what’s the point of keeping statistics that you can’t actually use numbers to track? Also flipping pages on the daily was just one byte too many for this little computer. *taps forehead* But I do LOVE that they’re there and remind me, at least on Mondays, that there’s all different parts to being a whole person. <3

    Extremely helpful and useful
It keeps the skills fresh in your mind and keeps you motivated to keep at it. The tracker, daily log, and monthly review are all great in their own way for different purposes and reasons. I’ve come a long way and stayed in track because of this book!

If you dislike diary cards, try this manual out!
Let’s make it clear: I do not like keeping a diary card at all! My therapist has used several variations of diary cards for me to use, hoping to find one I would remain in compliance with my homework from session to session. I bought this book on a whim, showed it to my therapist, and at last we are in agreement. Don’t get me wrong; I still despise filling out a diary card. This book has helped me keep many things organized in a way I had had great difficulties in managing on my own, such as keeping up with my weekly diary cards, being able to compare how I was doing from week to week, and reminding myself on a daily basis that even if i was having a totally rotten day, I still had things to be thankful for. My therapy sessions have become more productive since I started doing the diary cards (it took three weeks for me to get over myself and buckle down) on a regular basis, and I actually have more good days than bad days now.

    Structured well for therapy
I really like this book and will definitely be recommending it to my depressed and anxious patients. It reminds you to focus on what’s important, and has lots of opportunities to reevaluate what you are doing and make positive changes. Also, having everything in one place makes it convenient for people to bring to appointments and review their progress with a therapist. Even if you don’t have a therapist yet, try using at this book and learning a bit more about DBT techniques. Then decide whether or not you want to get some extra help (it’s recommended that you do).

Bought a new book to find it was really used.
I have used this book this past year and found it life changing. It helps me really track my skills and allows me to practice them in a way that they become natural to me.I was disappointed in my purchase because I paid full price for a new item to be sent a written in used book. There is nothing wrong with the product itself and I believe it was a mistake, but this disappointed me.

Exactly as expected. Definitely an amazing tool for utilizing DBT skills on a daily basis. It helps to have it as a tool for daily reflection at the end of the day, which sets you up for better choices later on. Being able to see progression or setback, and keeping track of successes or mishaps helps put the days into focus, An invaluable tool for anyone trying, beginner or expert, to use DBT skills daily and who’s in need of an organized way to track your progress.

Not religious? Sub in your own spiritual practices. I use that space for tarot/meditation tracking. This planner is exactly what i wanted it to be. A way to organize my thoughts so that i stop rolling into my biweekly therapy appointments confused and overwhelmed and not knowing more than what im struggling with for the past few days.
